Ya, this is a cat blog, but senior pups are cool too.

Just a word about the great things one can achieve with the use of twitter.

I have a ton of wonderful friends on Twitter that are in a group called, Anipals. Together online parties are put together to raise money for animal charities. Sometimes we are able to meet in person and share the gathering in what is called a "Tweet-up".

This is late notice but today a group of my friends get to meet in St. Louis to help raise money for a Senior Dog Rescue. Here is the blog, called Senior Dogs Rock!

Details: For those of our friends that can't make it to our fundraiser our twitter pals @MoxieDaDoxie and @MaggieTKat will be pawtying online on twitter from 5pm to 8pm EDT.

I love to see old Golden Retrievers with the white around the eyes. So full of love, wisdom and loyalty. Its sad to see them needing homes, but it happens sometimes. One day we went to an estate sale. There in the back was an old retriever, now with out a home because both his elderly humans had passed. he was a lucky dog that day and a guy took him home.

Not only are old Retrievers cool, so are the other breeds and mutts. If you have a space please rescue one, they always appreciate it with love. They do often require more vet care though. If you cant take one in, please donate to those who can help or take some dog toys to your local shelter.

Missing Tazzy 21 yrs old By Morris Cat

Tazzie - she was a tiny dark tortie girl who lived for cuddles. She slept curled round Auntie P's head, even though Uncle G is allergic to cats - he just got used to taking an antihistamine pill every day because he loved her so much :) She was adopted when she was about 10 years old - I still lived with Auntie P then. Tazzie got the inside of the house and I stayed outside most of the time - we didn't get on very well and I bullied her a bit. When I came to live with NJ & Mr L, Tazzie and I both blossomed! She got a new lease of life and I rediscovered the joys of snuggling ;)

We met again a couple of years ago, when we'd both been to the V-E-T and Auntie P came back to NJ's for a coffee. Tazzie hissed and swiped at me, chased me outside, ate my food, and then went upstairs and fell asleep on NJ & Mr L's bed! She got her revenge on me, MOL!

Her favourite toy was called Snakey - it was a stick with a piece of bright green fur attached to a string. She used to fight with it, then drag it to Auntie P & Uncle G to show off her "kill", hee! A couple of years ago, NJ commissioned @orangecatblues's primate to make an animini of Tazzie holding Snakey - Auntie P loved it :) Tazzie is still playing with Snakey at RB now - G&P buried them both in their garden.

She was very feisty when she wanted to be - she didn't approve of dogs visiting the house, and this 5 pound elderly cat had a husky and a labrador slinking round the edge of the living room hoping that she didn't spot them!

Despite that, she was the friendliest cat when it came to humans. Everyone who sat down was a potential cat bed - she'd even roll over for tummy tickles when workmen came to the house!

She'll be very much missed by the whole family, but I'm sure she's dragging Snakey round RB to show off her hunting skills ;)

A family has discovered their cat is the oldest in the world after reaching its 39th birthday.
Pet Lucy was born way back in 1972 when Ted Heath was Prime Minister and petrol was 33p a gallon.

Cat experts say she has clocked up the equivalent of 172 human years - and cats live to be about 15 on average which means Lucy has more than doubled her life expectancy.

Lucy is still fit as a fiddle - and catches mice in the garden. Owner Bill Thomas, 63, inherited Lucy when his wife's Godmother Maria Lewis died in 1999.........

Nj's Mom, Grandmother of my dearest @Morriscat in Scotland adopted this lovely persain cross in January of 2010. She was recused from the free ads and they figured her to be around 11 or 12.

What a really cool kitty. This smart Chi learned to open her wardrobe door just far enough to squeeze in & sleep on the shelf, she was the queen of her home and very much loved by her whole family. Last Friday NJ took this pic of Chi Chi laying next to her in a chair. 6 days later she passed from kidney failure. She had quit eating and this was very sudden. She had a great last year of her life in a loving home and she touched her family with love.

Anipal Photo Hunt #12: All Souls' Day = Celebrate passed ones

In many traditions, November 1st is considered All Saints' Day, which is followed by All Souls' Day on November 2nd. Latin America celebrates All Souls' Day as Dia de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead. Wikipedia has a great page about it here.

Petie is a 15 year old orange gentlmen cat.

Recently he has had some health issues and was at the vet for a while.
In support many of the twitter Anipals got together and used the hastag #lakewithpetie to help keep track of the converstations. This is a wonderful supportive way to give out positive energy that seems to help quite a bit.

Many virtual adventures went on as everyone waited at Petie's get away lake house, for Petie to come home. Water skiing, hiking, campfires, good food and much more. Meanwhile Petie's parents can look on twitter and see the warm support from lots of friends.

@freshotis @danapixie and some others made photos of what is happening, all those participating and lots of food.

One of the anipals, @pumpkinpuddy is collecting stories fro #lakewithpetie for a book.

Plus to keep things going positive Anipals pair up and have virtual weddings. @pandafur , Petie's girlfriend left a marriage proposal in the personals of the Anipal Times

Soon there was wedding shower outings and pawties to be planned along with a wedding day set. Those like @danapixie that does so much for us, is making great photos for the event. Plus there are planners that cordinate dj's and bartenders.

Another Anipal that is there for us is Gunner a Senior gold lab.

He recently got very ill and was at the vet. Soon Anipals gathered on his porch to wait for news. #gunnerporch was used to help support our friend.

@JinJinDoggy kept track of everyone and made a pic of everyone that was there to support.

It turns out that he has Heart worms, which they said can be cured now days along with medication for life. Which is certainly lots better than is used to be.

Percy is a cat that my human rescued 14 years ago and placed with some friends. Because of some changes in his humans’ lives, he is in need of finding a new home again.

We call him Percy the Wonder Cat because he has managed to get around very well fur 14 years despite his front leg that didn’t form quite right. He hops and bounds instead of walkin’."

Lady is about 120; in human years! We don't know how old she is, because she was taken in as a (charmingly persistent) stray. She has been a part of our family for close to 15 years. Her longevity is probably due to being pampered, and kept by members of the our family - all her life. I'm the third family member to adopt her, over the past 15 years. She has rarely ever been outside in the wilds, or around other cats. She is strictly an indoor (window sill) cat, but has spent some years allowed as far as a patio / balcony. I just adopted her, my first ever very own pet. She is a family cat, so she knows me really well. Unfortunately, she came to me on the last hour ... of her 9th life. She needs a lot of special senior cat care, and TLC. There is so much to know about Cat care, it boggles the mind. Like: Cats will die if they eat / ingest chocolate! I never knew that. No problem here, as I'm allergic to chocolate. I'm also allergic to cats! In this video; Lady has just been brushed on the balcony, hair and dander is floating around outside. I'm allergic, and this (also air purification/filter systems) is the only way I can manage to keep her. So, I brush and groom her several times a day (she loves it) outside. Naturally after all that brushing, fluffing and cuddling she knows she will get fed a treat. I however need her to wait a few minutes, to let the dander and hair dissipate - before letting her back into the house. Funny, when she is inside she wants nothing but to go out, and when she is out ... She was quite the patient Lady, and did enjoy her treats. She is a very sweet, beautiful and loving Kitty. I hope she hangs out with me for a long time.

Even though this is a blog for senior cats, I also include rescues and shelters of all kinds.

I would like to mention some Twitter activity by the Anipals which are helping some dogs and other shelter animals out.

Every Thrusday night the Anipals put on a virtual night club hang out celebration, called #nipclub. Search that hash tag and watch the pawty. Hopefully you join in. This week the tips and dontations go to help senior dogs at the St. Louis Senior dog project. Just like senior cats, the senior dogs are full or love and wisdom.

Also @cokiethecat holds a weekly blog with a different subject every week. At Anipal photo hunt, this week it is, Adopt a less adoptable pet. Which is usually the seniors or special needs animals.

Along with that, @Cosmohavanese is helping out dogs with Pedigree...

Twitter Anipals help those grieving

I have been a part of the Anipals of twitter around a year now.
They are wonderful and caring, keeping twitter real and personal as it was meant to be.

One of the hard things about the anipals is the passing of the seniors.
We get to know them and thier families and see the pain.
Somedays its near unbarable as it comes in waves.

But you got to see the positive side aswel.
The anipals are super supportive and assist the humans with the grieving.

@pepismartdog who has passed but still visits from what they call Over the Rainbow Bridge.
He he takes the passed family member in a cart to a better place where the party continues on. Like ghosts the passed anipals still can tweet like things are normal. This is a huge help for grieving humans.

With that comes lots of condolences and concerns with what is called #pawcircle by @danapixie. She workes incredibly hard making sure everyone sick, hurt lost or passed, is included in prayer concerns.

Many times the #pawcircle creates a positive vibe and Anipals get better.

I am blown away by the great community of the Anipals of twitter.

Here is a recent blog entry by @Yoda_the_dog about his sisiter that was 18.

There are several that are close to ORB this week, its tough for sure. Nascar is 20, but they keep spirits up by knowing that he will soon be with his wife DC kitty. We need them and so they will keep tweeting and joining in with the parties that help raise money for animal charities.

On a more positive note, there are virtual weddings with celebration photo-shopped pics of anipals in love, and so on. Here is a great link to events.

FlippyCat of YouTube has passed. Will be missed

On July 6th Flippy was put to sleep :(

His health problems got the better of him.

For the last few months we had been treating him for renal failure, which he handled well....However in his last day, Flippy was suffering from heart issues and could not move around much without tiring. We had blood work and an x-ray performed, which also showed a large mass in his tummy. It was time to let him go...

Thanks for all of your supportive comments. Members of Flippy's family have been trying to read them (there are so many!). He will be missed when not starring in future videos here.

Cokie is a very spry 16 yr old cat with nerve damage requiring him to wear a diaper (PANTS!) for the last three years - the result of a fall from an 80' palm tree. Hell, yeah!

Make a memorial for your cat in the internet

Making a memorial helps you get through the loss and you feel you have done something for your loved one for everything they have done for you.

Besides making a nice burial, you can also write out your feelings in your blog, facebook, Squidoo, profile page on your favorite site and so on.

It may be even easier to do something before they pass.

Such as what I did with Petunia, by making a video. Knowing I would have a difficult time doing it after.

If you are on Twitter it helps to get involved with the Anipal community. There is a lot of kind support there when you cat passes and they help you feel your pet has gone to a better place.

What a great way to show off your old cat and show your appreciation for thier years of love! By making a lens about him or her!

Squidoo is a site that lets you make what they call a "Lens" about what every you like, for free.

They give you tools called modules which do different things like hold a video, several videos, show pic from flicker, guestbook, amazon links and more.

Squidoo pays you for traffic and gives to charity also. Amazon and Ebay modules pay you commission. It might not be a lot, but making lens is a ton of fun.

When Alisa Morris adopted a kitten that she named Caterack in the summer of 1979, she had no idea that the 5-week-old ball of fluff who was blind in her left eye would still be staring back at her some 30 years later.

"Feral cats were born around my mother's house, and there was one she begged me to take from her," says Morris, an abstract artist. "She said 'there is something special about this one.' "

She wasn't kidding. The indoor cat, who Morris says is now 30 years old, lives a simple life with her owner and her husband, Jim Wesbrooks, in a three-bedroom house in Midlothian, Texas. Though she can't hear very well and only has vision in her right eye, Caterack is still mobile, though sometimes shaky on her feet, and enjoys life to the fullest — and likely could be among the oldest housecats in the world.

"I exercise in the house and she comes in ... If I put the stereo on loud enough, she reacts," says Morris. "She'll let me do lifts with her and I don't go around in circles because I don't want to make her nauseated. But she gets right in the middle of it."

Unlike most cats, Caterack enjoys confrontations with the vacuum. "When I've got the vacuum cleaner running, she comes to that. She does like it because she can hear it," she says.

Morris, who "celebrates and thanks God every day Caterack is here," takes special care to make sure her senior pet is comfortable in her old age. "She let's me hold her and brush her. I brush her every day and I watch TV and I hold her," she says, adding that the cat loves to lay on jeans. "She'll let you do anything to her."

What's the secret to the cat's longevity? Nothing special that Morris can think of. The cat has dined on Purina Cat Chow most of her life, until recently when Morris switched her to wet food because she was having trouble chewing. "I've had to go to the little package stuff that's wet," she says. "That's the only thing that she can get down."

This is Lucky, my 16-year-old tuxedo/Turkish Angora cat. He REALLY REALLY REALLY loves his catnip. He doesn't go insane and run all over the place, but my Maine Coon always did (R.I.P Merlin). I also have a Siamese, Bobo, who hides under the bed all day and comes out at night.

He also had a bad liver disease, and we found him behind the couch, dead one morning, after my hopes of him living had almost completely crashed.

Charity behavior.. They should be more grateful!

This blog is about shelters as well, so I want to say something about how some charities or shelters treat people.

Sure the people at animal charities, don't necessarily like people, but people are their contributors. Every little bit counts. Things add up including how many people the charity has been rude to.

About 2 years ago I noticed a change bottle in a pet store for a wild bird rescue and some brochures. So I grabbed a brochure just in case and threw in a buck.

Well one day on the way home there was a male peacock trying to get it on with traffic. When I got home I gave the the bird people a call. A lady answered and rudely screamed at me saying that it's not a wild bird and not to bother them.

About 6 months later the charity went out of business.

Now here's the one that really has me wondering.

About 3 months ago a local no-kill cat shelter had put out an ad for needing workers.

We had taken many stray cats there for fixing. I had also volunteered for them at their yearly auction. The past 2 years they went through some management changes and the last auction seemed to be quite a mess. They never even sent me a thank you email.

Anyways, I figured I could use a part time job helping, so I applied. About a week later I get a call to go in and work with them for a few hours as an interview.

It was the most nasty thing I ever did, ever. But I would do it as work if they would take me. As I was leaving one of the gals said she would let me know in a week.

Now I understand that usually employers doing interviews don't necessarily have to get back to you, but still as a charity they should show the courtesy.

After a couple weeks I sent and email with no response.

They had the listing on Craig's list for quite some time. One of our friends said it may even be a scam to get people in to help for free, especially since there are so many people with out jobs.

The shelter is pretty popular, so I would think that quite a few of their regular donors also went in to "interview" for them.

Maybe they just didn't like me, whatever! But if they aren't calling or communicating with other people that went in, I can't imagine those people being to happy either. Plus bad word spreads.

If they are judging people assuming they don't have much money so why should they care, well every little bit adds up.

I may not have lots of money right at this moment, but I had them in my Will to get my cat figure collection if something were to happen to me. My collection loaded with Goebels, Royal Copenhagen, and more. Probably about $3000, and growing.

I just changed that over to another local shelter.

I'm just saying if you are a charity that depends on donations, you better be grateful to your donors.

A photo of a very old calendar I have for the C&O railroad. A kitten sleeping is used as a part of their logo. This cat was either the father of the kitten or the kitten after it grew up. The calendar of this "old man Chessie" is more rare than the other paintings of the kitten.
I love that a railroad uses a cat for the logo.

Petunia Cat passed quietly + some poems

Pearl’s mom Petunia passed away this moring. May 11 09. I burried her out next to Batley and Emma. Just a rough year for us, and our pet family.

Friday Petunia quit eating and started to have trouble breathing. Cancer was spreading double time all the sudden. Each day it had grown to take some of her face, probably blocking her air way. If we kept her alive much longer she would have ended up like the orange cat. We took her in to the doc. He gave her a tranquilizer and said it will make it easier for the final stuff, and then he left for a little while. The tranq was all she needed, and she slowing went to sleep with us there. So hard on both of us. The song by Pussycat dolls “hate this part” keeps going thru my head.

This one hurt more, because she was still young. I now understand more about how bad cancer is. It takes a life too soon, while the life still wants to live.

As I cleaned out Petunia’s room, Pearl came in looking all over for her mother. She looked at me and let out a tiny “meep”…

Petunia, Stray Cat with Cancer

It's easier to do a video of a pet before they die.

Petunia came with the house. There's space enough under the house for small animals. She had 2 sets of kittens before we could trap her and get her spayed. We kept one kitten, Pearl.

We slowly made friends with Petunia. There was also a big Tom cat we named Captain Balls. We could pet him. When you have strays spayed and neutered they tend to stick around and keep away other stray cats. So there weren't any kittens her for a few years.

This past winter the Seattle area was hit with a 2 or 3 week long super freeze.

Petunia's eye had become worse. She had a small spec or injury to her eye when we first saw her, and it got steadily worse. We were able to catch her and get her to the vet for meds in November. She was so good.

Then in the news was the threat of the big storm. She wouldn't come inside and I was worried. Then on the day before it was to freeze that night, I looked at Petunia and her eye was bleeding. I freaked, called the vet and told them I will bring her in as soon as I catch her. To my surprise I picked her right up, she was so weak.

She stayed at the vet through that weekend till they worked on her the fallowing Monday. Then when they took her eye out, there was a tumor behind it. They sent in a biopsy and it came back as aggressive cancer.

We got her home just before Christmas. She owns the Ebay room now, gets all the food and bleeding she wants and has bird TV out her window.

Sadly her cancer is growing, it can be felt under her chin, behind her ear and it's bulging out now where her eye used to be:(

Old Orange Cat with Cancer Can't Eat

Since the old tom cat went missing, there has been many more cats comming around. This guy is most recent. Behind his ear is a huge growth, probably cancer, as it seems to be common here on the strays and birds.(I need to move) His mouth is part missing or non functional. I got a good look at him today. He did manage to pick up some food, but it was frustrating for him. I've seen this a few times in old orange cats, but not so bad. We may try to trap him and see if we can get help?..............

Update

Today I went out to put some food in the dish and he was there laying down in the corner. He stumbled off.

Later he came back and tried to eat food. It was so sad, he would put his head down sideways to try and scrape up some food into his half a mouth. He was all wet from his drool and the sore on his head looked even bigger. In frustration he laid back down. Then the flies wouldn’t leave him alone. I got some video, so I could show Jim and we could decide what to do.

When Jim got home he looked into the dog house and the cat was sitting in there crying to us for help. He was no longer scared of us and wanted relief. So sad… I called the nearest vet, got the carrier and I was able to pick him right up.

He smelled like dead flesh, rot on his legs and the huge sore on his head. His lips had been eaten away by the cancer or what ever it was. He looked very old too. Poly-dactyl with 2 extra claws on the front feet like out Pearl, maybe a relative.

The vet was waiting for us and took him away. They were thankful that we cared enough to bring in a stray that was suffering, and they didn’t charge us anything.

Jim takes these things so hard. He said how much he really feels people should keep their cats indoors after he has seen what happens to the outdoor cats.

Imagine if he had the spoiled plush life of living indoors with out any coyotes, eagles, other cats, cars and exc.. This cat would have been a big healthy orange guy sitting on your lap and sleeping around the house, happy and purring.
